So Dean has expressed his belief that it is unlikely that they will make this movie the way it ought to be made. I confess that I am also on the fence about this. From what I remember of the graphic novel, I cannot conceive of any way of actually making it into a film. (Unlike, for example, Alan Moore's V for Vendetta, which seemed like it was practically begging to be filmed.) Then again, I would have the same thing about LotR, and we all know how that turned out.

Any other thoughts? I'm really excited about this movie, just because it is probably one of the better novels of the 20th century. (Time magazine actually placed it somewhere in it's Top 100). Anyone else read it?

Well long story short, Dean and I watched this thing on the history channel analyzing the psyche of super heroes. I thought it was really interesting and ending up getting a book about it from Amazon, while I was there I saw they suggested the watchmen and I heard really good things about it (even from NPR!) and I decided to get it. So I wll be reading it soon

I actually have never heard of The Watchmen before. So, I have no idea what it's about. The trailer just looked like a bunch of totally unrelated random shit going on at the same time.

I wouldn't mind reading that again Patrick.

Basically my feeling is...and it has been a long time....but what Matt said like it's hard to see it as a movie. Like to me with comic movies I kinda classify them as ones like mainstream will like and ones they just wont get (Thor comes to mind but thats another story). My point would be movies that involve super complex stories and characters and especially larger than life villians or heros usually dont do well, I assume because they try and change it to gain acceptance). I get that feeling here. But ya who knew the new Batmans would be so well done?

Ah, that might affect one's reaction.

Go read it. Regardless of how awesome/shitty the movie is, the original graphic novel is amazing. In particular, the bit where Dr. Manhattan first goes to Mars is hands down the most perfectly constructed single comic issue that I have ever read.
